Do you know how IT happened? Do you know how you how and why you got there? Do you simply find yourself somewhere you’d rather not be?
This is how…
One of the great books that I’ve been learning from is called “The Slight Edge”, Jeff Olsen. Check it out on the recommended reading list page. This book contains the secret to the above question. The great mystery is simply, you got there by a series of small actions that you did, or didn’t do everyday, over a period of time. This is the way that Mr. Olsen puts it:
“No matter in what arena, in life or work or play, the difference between winning and losing, the gap that separates success and failure, is so slight, so subtle, that most never see it.”
And what is that gap? It’s the difference between either doing, or not doing simple little actions everyday. These actions are easy to do, and easy not to do. But if you do them, and you do them consistently over a long period of time, you will succeed.
What are these actions? Well, that somewhat depends upon what you are trying to accomplish, but for sure there are certain actions that would apply across the board, for example your health. No matter what you are trying to accomplish, being healthy will be necessary.
It takes daily discipline to implement the Slight Edge. It takes a commitment to do the things that are easy to do, but maybe just a bit easier not to do. You must train yourself to get into the habit and mindset of the daily disciplines.
In order to help you get in the mindset and in the habit of the Slight Edge, how about some pushups? Specifically, 100 pushups…everyday. If you do 100 pushups everyday, at the end of a year, that’s 36500 pushups that you will have done. Do you think having done 36500 pushups will have helped make you stronger? Absolutely it will. But it’s also to help to get you in the mindset…the discipline of doing something that you moves you forward everyday.
It doesn’t matter how or when you do them during the day. It could be 10 at at time across the whole day, it could be from your knees, it really doesn’t matter. But your goal is to move towards 100 in as little time as possible.
So maybe 100 is not the right number for you, maybe it really is too much in the beginning (but then your goal is to get to 100), or maybe it’s not enough. Pick your number, but it’s gotta be a number that’s on the edge of very easy not to do.
Also, this is everyday…it must be. Even if it’s bench press day…it doesn’t matter, you will also do 100 pushups. If you are sick in bed, you will get out of bed to do 100 pushups. That is how success happens.
We’ve setup the Pushups for Slight Edge accountability group on Facebook. If you’d like to be a part of it, please connect with me (see the About me page) and let me know. Or just send me an email. The purpose of the group is simply to post your number for the day, and also its a place where we can discuss health and fitness topics or success principles. It’s a place to celebrate moving forward with the Slight Edge!
