It’s the time of year at my house when the baby birds are jumping out of their nests.

The moments right after they jump out are critical. Can’t fly. Wobbly legs. Not sure of themselves or where they can hide. They’re vulnerable.

And they’re on their own.

The parents might be hanging around. They might dive-bomb or otherwise try to distract a predator, but they can’t really do anything.

The bird has a decent chance of making it if they can get to cover and stay hidden long enough. Just long enough for their wings to start working. Once they get their wings, then they’re in business. They can evade. They can move. They can feed themselves. They can be a bird.

All baby birds have a moment of critical vulnerability.

But if they make it through, they can soar.
