“On your left!” serves as a polite warning to the walkers on a trail.
It means, “I’m going faster than you and I’m about to overtake you. Please don’t do anything rash. Just stay on your course. Please let me by. If you don’t, I’m gonna run you over.” It’s the polite version of “Get outta my way!”
